The bentwood industry was among the most technologically advanced in Vienna at the turn of the century, and it quickly became one of the most artistically sophisticated as well. After Michael Thonet’s patent expired in 1869, others were free to enter the market. To keep up with its competitors, Thonet Brothers embraced modern design by producing pieces designed by Loos, Wagner, Hoffmann, Moser and others during the early years of the twentieth century.
