“Morris” Armchair
SOLD Otto Prutscher (1880-1949) A forerunner of Modernism, the design of the “Morris” chair strikes us in its combination of flat and bent wood, straight lines and curves. The back can be reclined through the functional details of nickel plated attachments to the arms, which are connected behind the back rest with a rod. The Morris armchair was illustrated in the October 28, 1905 issue of the magazine “Thonet Zentral Anzeiger”. Recently a drawing of this armchair has been found in the Prutscher archive. This has allowed Thonet expert Jiri Uhlir to attribute this design to Otto Prutscher. Otto Prutscher was a student of Hoffmann at the School of Arts andCrafts in Vienna and a vital member of the Wiener Werkstaette. Height: 38” Width: 24” Depth: 28-36” Lit: Thonet Catalogue, supplement, 1907; Thonet Catalogue, 1911, p.111; Giovanni Renzi, Il mobile moderno, Milano, 2008, pp.156-157
