Vienna Secession three-arm chandelier

MM-45-59

Vienna, c.1900
Hand-hammered and chased brass, glass beads
H: 46.5” W: 21”

This exceptional Vienna Secession chandelier reflects the influence of Charles Rennie Mackintosh on Austrian design at the turn of the century. The interior designs of Mackintosh and the Glasgow School were closely related to trends already taking place in Vienna. As of the VIII Secessionist exhibition in 1900, which focused on modern European design, an affinity between the two groups developed which led them for a brief period to pursue parallel courses. Mackintosh’s geometric handling of form reflected the same relationship to Art Nouveau as the Viennese. The hand hammered treatment of the surface also shows the influence of the British Arts and Crafts movement, in which each object was elevated to a work of art.
