Biedermeier Mirror

vc-11-41

Austrian, c. 1820

Walnut veneer with gilding

In the Biedermeier home, in addition to paintings and drawings, mirrors adorned the walls. They were sometimes made in conjunction with console tables, or were hung in their own right. The designs for mirrors were as varied as those for any other piece of furniture. The frame of this attractive mirror is veneered in a rich walnut with carved and gilt borders with an egg-and-dart motif. The mirror can be hung vertically or horizontally.
