Gilt limewood porcelain display
VC-06-64
Germany, 19th century
The wooden étagère is meant to be mounted on the wall and was made in the 19th century as is the date of the Meissen porcelain figures which are wonderfully incorporated throughout the 15 “windows” of this piece.
Provenance: Gift of Prince August Wilhelm of Prussia (1882-1951) to the actress Valerie von Martens after a special performance of hers. This étagère with 20 Meissen figures is from the Schloss Charlottenburg, the largest and most beautiful palace in Berlin. Prince Wilhelm was the last crowned price of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire. He was forced to abdicate the throne at the end of World War I and his political life thereafter was limited to failed efforts at restoring his family to power.
