In 1899, Gustav Siegel, a young cabinetmaker and student at the Vienna School of Applied Arts was hired to head the design department of Jacob & Josef Kohn. Kohn’s new direction was first acclaimed at the 1900 Exposition Universelle held in Paris, where the installations Siegel designed were awarded the gold medal over those of the bentwood company Gebrueder Thonet.
