Pair Armoires

VC-13-63

Vienna, 1825/30
Walnut veneer

Ref: ‘Biedermeier – The invention of simplicity’ Exhibition catalogue, Milwaukee Art Museum/ Albertina, Vienna, 2006/7 – Section I-5, Illustration 6

The elegant clear structure of this fine pair of single door armoires speaks for itself. The clear large surface of the beautifully figured walnut veneered door is flanked by double pillars, of which the veneer is applied in matching mirrored diagonals. Even the top of this fine pair of armoires is veneered. One piece is fitted with shelving, the other with a rod for hanging clothes.

A similar pair of armoires is exhibited in Paris at the exhibition: Biedermeier – the invention of simplicity. This exhibition, which was produced by the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2006, traveled to Vienna’s Albertina and to Berlin, with its final destination at the Louvre in Paris.
