Bertold Loeffler graduated under Czeschka and Koloman Moser at the
School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna in 1900, before being appointed professor, where he tought painting until 1935. In 1906 he founded, together with Powolny and the sculptor Lang the Wiener Keramik (Vienna Ceramic workshop), whose products were sold through the Wiener Werkstaette after 1908. Loeffler was also a co-founder of theKunstschau (Art Show), the first exhibition to be held in 1908. Over the following years he worked on all major Wiener Werkstaette projects, such as the interior of the Cabaret Fledermaus and Palais Stocklet. His work for the
Wiener Werkstaette included ceramics, graphic art, jewelry and costumes. He was also a member of the Kuenstlerhaus and Austrian Werkbund, taking part in all major exhibitions of his day.
This exceptional fountain with a putto riding a dolphin reflects Loeffler’s approach to art. His playful ideas, light-heartedness and apparent simplicity continue to attract and charm us today.
