Nancy, c. 1900

etched signature: Galle
opaque cased glass

Emile Galle was the leading French glass maker and founder of the School of Nancy. By 1890 he was running a large factory producing glass vessels, of which no two were identical. Many of these were sold by S. Bing’s Parisian shop ‘Art Nouveau’.

For decoration he favored flowers and foliage, insects or marine creatures. These two cased glass vessels, decorated with orchids and water lilies, are made in two colors (grey blue and amethyst), which take on subtly different tones from the qualities of light they transmit.
