Josef Danhauser (1780-1829) was the most prolific cabinetmaker during the Biedermeier era, his furniture was used by the bourgeoisie and aristocracy alike. This can be seen in drawings of interiors which show aristocracy and royalty in their private rooms, and in the amount of Biedermeier furniture in Vienna’s Hofmobiliendepot (Court Furniture Depot) used to furnish imperial residences and guest quarters. Emperor Franz the I ordered pieces from Josef Danhauser, as did his daughter, archduchess Sophie, the mother of the future emperor Franz Josef I.
As reflected in these fabulous chairs, Josef Danhauser designs are full of imagination and the craftsmanship of the highest quality. A collection of Danhauser chairs, as well as 2500 designs from his workshop (including this design) are in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (Museum fuer Angewandte Kunst).
