'Lit En Gondole aux pattes de Lion' Attributed to Jacob Freres Paris, c. 1800 Mahogany veneer, gilt antico verde lion paw feet After the French Revolution of 1789, the brief period of collaboration of the Jacob brothers, named 'Jacob freres', beween 1796 and 1803 marked the beginning of Empire furniture production.These innovative and elegant pieces, such as this boat-shaped bed (lit en gondole) with its carved lion paw feet, introduced designs 'a l'egyptien', referring to Napoleon's Egyptian campaign of 1798-9, and 'a l'antique', using Greek and Roman prototypes.
