Bentwood Child's Cradle
Vienna, c. 1904 made by Thonet Brothers model no. 2 mahogany stained beechwood This charming Thonet cradle is fitted with beautiful white linen, a small blanket and a pillow. A child may be gently rocked to sleep in the bassinet. The cradle, which can be moved on its small wheels, also has an adjustable canapee. This cradle was made by Thonet Brothers by using bent beechwood, a process perfected by the German Michael Thonet between 1830 and 1850. At the invitation of Prince Metternich, Michael Thonet brought this process to Vienna in 1842. His five sons took over the business in 1871 (Thonet Brothers). Around the turn of the century, modern design and technology married happily in the bentwood furniture industry. By 1904, the year this cradle was made, Thonet Brothers was proud to have no fewer than seven factories in various parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Height: 39" Width: 22" Depth: 48"
