Set of four Biedermeier side chairs

Vienna, c.1825 Walnut veneer H: 36.5” W: 17.5” D: 20” Seat H: 19” At the end of the first quarter of the 19th Century, Viennese chairs were characterized by an airy and imaginative formation of the back. In these chairs, the suggested feathers reflect the romantic fascination with nature, which developed during the Biedermeier era. The use of stylized naturalistic forms in furniture design and gave a sense of informality which suited the Biedermeier lifestyle and was very different from the earlier ideals of Neoclassical decoration.
