Vienna Secession armchair
Marcel Kammerer (1878-1969) Armchair Vienna, c.1910 Made by Thonet Brothers (stamp) Mahogany stained beechwood Architect and designer Marcel Kammerer studied and worked under Otto Wagner. He assisted Wagner in designing furniture made out of square bent wood in what came to be known as the ‘Postsparkassen style’. Wagner instilled into his pupils: ‘what was not useful could not be beautiful.’ Developments in style should come about as a result of new construction techniques and materials. These offered such a wealth of opportunity that it would be no longer necessary to imitate old styles, as had been the practice during the second half of the 19th century. Height: 31” 32” x 24”
