Neoclassical Upright Piano
Vienna, c.1810 Mahogany veneer with gilt accents Ivory and ebony keys H: 87 W: 51.5 D: 22.5 inches In the beginning of the nineteenth century, during the age of Schubert, Schumann and Beethoven, this form of upright piano, known as ‘Piano Giraffe’ was developed in Austria around 1800. Instrument-makers designed these early upright pianos in various fanciful shapes in the Empire style. This piano incorporates the “additional keys” which were first added in 1794, bringing the piano up to six full octaves.
