Biedermeier Antiques: Hand-Crafted Austrian Simplicity

Our collection of Biedermeier antiques (1815-1848) exemplifies the period’s visionary simplicity and revolutionary modernity. In relative peace following the fall of Napoleon, Austrians focused on their private lives and surroundings. As a result, the flourishing middle class demanded beautiful, one of kind furniture. Graceful forms highlighted beautiful veneers and showcased the craftsmanship in cutting and matching them. Pieces were prized for being multi-functional (such as writing desks that became game tables) and for keeping secrets safe (many working locks and original keys).

Highlights of our Biedermeier Collection include:

Original Empire Furniture: Exotic Woods, Ebonized Detail

Empire furniture was at its height from 1799-1815. Evocative Empire and Neoclassical furniture was accented with exotic woods, ebonized detail, gilt bronze (ormolu), crystal from Sweden, and Greek and Roman adornments and symbols.
